A Golf Course is not only a place to challenge skill and enjoy the game, it is also a place to reach out and give back to the surrounding community as well. Here are several initiatives sponsored by the Rossmoor Golf Club and its Golf Professionals, all of which demonstrate the involvement and caring of our Golf Community for its neighbors.

Annual Rossmoor Charity Pro-Member Golf Classic.
This prestigioius annual sporting event showcases, in a grand way, New Jersey's premiere adult community and its championship course. But t
he Golf Classic shows Rossmoor off in another way: it is a community with heart. Over the past 22 years, over half a million dollars has been raised and donated to charity. The money is raised through the Golf Classic itself and through the associated Charity Ball, Angel Program and corporate sponsors. In 2007, PNC Bank, JCP&L, Comcast Cable and Allen & Stults each donated $5000.

The recipients for the 22nd Annual Event in 2007 — as an example — included the Rossmoor Kiwanis Food Pantry (which supplies some 25 tons of food to the needy this year), and the Deborah Hospital Foundation (Deborah Hospital, Located In Browns Mills, NJ, specializes in heart, lung and vascular care. No patient is turned away because of their inability to pay.) Other recipients included the First Aid Squads of Monroe, Jamesburg, Spotswood and Cranbury.

Pros were drawn not only from the Rossmoor Club but from twenty seven other New Jersey Golf Clubs as well. Each Pro was teamed with three amateurs (avg) from the Rossmoor Golf Club in two better ball/four person format. Bleachers were set up at the back of the eighteenth hole, and spectators were allowed to follow players along the course.

An example of the schedule of events in 2007 was:
  • 9 AM with a Golfers' breakfast on the Clubhouse Patio.
  • 9:15 Watch the pros warm up
  • 9:45 Welcome golfers, introduce pros
  • 10AM Shotgun Start
  • 11:30 Lunch and refreshments
  • 3PM Longest drive contest for pros on the 1st Tee
  • 3:45 Shootout for pros
  • 5PM Golfers reception on the Ballroom Patio
  • 6pm Awards in the Ballroom. A total of $12,475 was awarded to winning pros in 2007, with a top award of $1900. That same year, Perrine Motors (Cranbury) offered a 2007 Buick automobile, and Acme Motor (S Brunswick) a 2007 Nissan - for a hole-in-one on the sixth hole.

The PGA Westfield Junior Golfer State Competition
The Rossmoor Golf Club sponsors this event annually on the 2nd Monday and Tuesday in July. Participation is for approximately 130 Junior Golf enthusiasts (average ages of 9-17) from throughout the State of New Jersey. Rossmoor particularly appreciates using its course for the tournament as it promotes the game of golf to young people — the acknowledged future of the game.

The overall winner, often shooting in the 60s, becomes the sponsoring Westfield Insurance Company's New Jersey Champion. Later this person will compete in the National Westfield Golf Championship held in Ohio in September.

The Rossmoor Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament
Each year during the month of August, the Rossmoor Kiwanis Club issues an invitation to all Men and Women of the Rossmoor Golf Club, Associate Members and their guests to attend their Annual Charity Tournament. The format is Two Best Balls of Foursomes, and the club matches players applying as singles or up to full foursomes. There is an annual "Hole-in-One" Sponsor. Prizes are also available through the generosity of this sponsor on all Par 3 holes for "closest to the pin" and "closest to the line." There are separate prizes for men and women.

During the Tournament, the Kiwanis Club provides light refreshments both before and during the play, followed by a late afternoon Buffet in the Club House Ballroom.

Besides being a terrific day of Golf, the entry fees are the Rossmoor Kiwanis Clunbs primary fund raiser. Their outreach contributes to various charitable organizations and includes:

  1. Maintaining a food pantry in Monroe Township for the needy on a year round basis.
  2. Providing Scholarships to Monroe High School students.
  3. Supporting a Key Club and a Building Club at the Middle School.
  4. The Club also donates funds, as available, to many other local charities and First Aid Squads.

Pitch and Putt

This event promotes the interest of children in the game of golf, and is held annually at the Rossmoor Course in July.

Participants are often grandchildren of Rossmoor Residents or their friends, but include children from the surrounding community as well. No experience is necessary to enjoy the day. In 2007 there was a total of 120 boys and girls ranging in ages from 6-12.

After the contest, the kids and their folks repaired to the Ballroom and its patio for a feast of hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and sodas.
